GO OUTSIDE AND FUCKING WATCH IT
First if someone can get something for free, that person isn't going to respect the work and simply pass it off as being a piece of written kleenex. Part of the mindset of capitalism is selling something for a price which is mutually agreed upon between the seller and customer. Too expensive and people will pass it up and simply steal it. Too cheap and people will not hold it in any esteem.
Copyright tends to tie shit up in red tape. The creator dies and the creator's vulturous heirs cry their hearts out to maintain that copyright so they can continue sitting on their asses, being useless, collecting a sizeable stipend each and every month which finances their ivory backscratcher hobby. For example the song Happy Birthday is copyrighted and it's not about to fall into public domain anytime soon.
Funny thing is that once their work goes into the public domain, anyone and everyone publishes it to make a dime suddenly it's worthless in the eyes of the consumer.
