mines end
Finally Mine's End. This is the final goal of the Gnomish Mines. The much-sough treasure that's guaranteed in its depths is a luckstone. These are a Good Thing (tm) because they grant 3 points of luck and ensure that someone stays lucky. Of course luck cuts both ways and bad luck stays just as easily as good luck when holding a luckstone. A blessed luckstone keeps only good luck and lets the bad luck work itself off.

Grunt was faced with a couple mummies, a floating eye and a zombie. All were easily dispatched and the floating eye left a corpse which was swiftly consumed and conferred telepathy to Grunt. Now he can see all brainy enemies while blind which will make the game much easier. Telepathy isn't the only intrinsic he acquired because he slew an elf lord which made Grunt an insomniac. All sleep attacks and traps will have no effect upon him. Also a persnickety winter wolf cub had its head cleaved in two and upon eating this chilly beast Grunt became cold-resistant. Cold resistance is the most important resistance in my opinion because cold attacks become more prevalent and can really ruin one's game.

A cockatrice's hissing made Grunt start to stiffen but he wisely had a lizard corpse on his person and ate it to become limber once again. Plus a soldier dropped a pair of gloves which make wielding a cockatrice corpse feasible for him. Even in death a cockatrice corpse is dangerous and can turn the unprepared and unwary to stone. When wielded, the cockatrice corpse will turn all opponents to stone until it finally rots away. Funnily enough striking someone with a cockatrice corpse does not break weaponless conduct. Why? Ask the DevTeam. They think of everything. Two wraiths were kind enough to leave their corpses behind for Grunt. Wraith corpses are very good because if they're fresh enough and consumed then the character will go up an experience level. Grunt is now level 12!

The luckstone was acquired after triggering a level teleport trap and now Grunt can call it a day once he's ascended back to the main dungeon. Foolishly he went to take on four stone giants and nearly got his ass handed to him. He prayed to Set who protected him and healed him up. During his prayer one of the stone giants zapped a wand of create monster summoning a gelatinous cube, a rock mole and a shocking sphere. The gelatinous cube's corpse granted fire resistance to Grunt and a stone giant corpse satiated his hunger and increased his strength!

Being a greedy sort, typical for an orc, Grunt went back to Mine's End to pick up any stray gems and get other cool loot. On the way down he killed a white unicorn and acquired its horn for his own health. A unihorn, as it's known in the NetHack community, can restore lost attributes and cure poisoning, hallucination, sickness among other maladies.

Satisfying his greed Grunt made his way back to his stash in Minetown and got lucky with a scroll of identify which identified everything in his inventory! He has some good gems but it turns out that unidentified gray stone was a worthless flint stone! He charged downstairs, acquired an overlooked gray stone then set about slaughtering some fire giants which ended up being an object lesson for him. Grunt needs to be more careful when it comes to eating things because one of the corpses was rotted and caused food poisoning. Basically a fire giant held a boulder and dropped that upon succumbing to Grunt's axe. Another fire giant came along, picked up the remaining boulder and was killed by Grunt. Two boulders in one square is an annoying thing and can block off corridors. Grunt decided to zap his wand of striking at the boulders to make quick work of them since he left the pick axe back in his stash a few levels up. After wresting the final charge from the wand the boulders were smashed and it was about 100 turns later. The fire giant corpse had rotted and Grunt forgot that this can be a bad thing. He wasted a prayer and saved his hide but at least his strength is up to 18/25 rather than the paltry 18/01 he began his adventure with many moons ago.

Since it's nearly time to begin the descent to level four of the Dungeons of Doom Grunt decided to have a bit more action. He sought out a black unicorn he stumbled upon earlier. Unicorns are good monsters because they can identify if a gem is truly a gem or a worthless piece of glass. Throwing identified gems at unicorns also raises one's luck! An amethyst and fluorine stone were taken by a black unicorn on dungeon level two.

Hopefully Grunt's luck is maxed out!

meanwhile in another part of the dungeon
I've been playing my atheist, weaponless, vegan monk for ages. Kokujin has like 40k worth of gold and he recently found Fort Ludios! Since his armor class is a paltry one, I've decided that Kokujin is going to break atheist conduct and acquire divine protection to lower his armor class to be competitive in a dark and dangerous dungeon.

Sigh.

At least I may ascend a monk and still have the impetus to ascend an atheist monk later. If I ascend this incarnation of Kokujin then the next monk will be named Togashi.

oh fuck
Somehow, somewhere Kokujin hit a monster with a pick-axe which broke weaponless conduct. Two conducts down the terlit.
oh never mind
Kokujin turned to stone thanks to a chickatrice's hissing during a new moon.

Adding insult to injury, Kokujin didn't even make the top ten list despite having a better score than Kuresu (#8) from ages ago.

in yer dreams
I awoke with a feeling that a lot more was going on in my dream than the memories that survived the rigors of awakening on Thursday.

I decided to open a savings account so my money could do a little work for me. Since interest rates are high it's in my interest to invest somewhere. At the bank I discovered that if I had a savings account with more than a thousand dollars USD then I'd only get $50 but if I had less than a thousand bucks in my account then I'd get the six percent which really doesn't amount to anything. I kept arguing, making phone calls for more information to increase the validity of my argument beyond simple greed but the banks remained steadfast.

Sometimes dreams are more boring than necessary.
