I volunteered to stay late on Friday. Came back from lunch to an empty office. Seventeen minutes later the general manager came downstairs and told me to go home.

Plus I witnessed something pretty sad. The processor who goes "Hi Best Friend %n", where %n is anybody with a pulse, was the other processor who stayed late on Friday. A renewing customer had reapplied at our website, she called his work and was told the individual was no longer employed with the corporation.

Minutes later an angry email reached managers about how the individual got chewed out for personal calls at work. The department manager made the other processor twist and cringe because eventually two people at the individual's place of work said "LOL HE'S EMPLOYED" without acknowledging whomever the other processor spoke with earlier on Friday.

Shit, they could've taken her aside or whispered at her desk but this drama was a bit much for me.

i forgot to mention
Usury, Inc. uses lead generators to drum up business. I don't like lead generators because they forget to get information like the customer's position, the customer's supervisor's name or the customer's hire date. More stupid little questions that I have to ask to pick up someone else's slack. Plus Usury, Inc. pays these lead generators for this information. If Usury, Inc. is paying for this then Usury, Inc. can damned well demand that all required information is submitted at the website.

One of the funny things about people who apply through the lead generators is the fact that one eighth of the customers will say, "Didn't you already call?" or "I already got the loan from you. Is this some kind of scam?" I'd ask them if they applied at any other websites and they unhesitatingly answer in the negative. If they took a beat then I would figure they were lying so I, a company drone, would not be upset at the concept of competition.

Sometimes there'll be a customer who will ask about being offered a credit card. We don't deal with credit. If Usury, Inc. dealt with credit then the annual percentage rate wouldn't be three or four figures. Nor would three quarters of the applications receive a fucking loan because of their credit score.

On Thursday there was a very polite customer who wanted to pay a loan in full because ever since the application submission the customer's mailbox has been full of spam, above and beyond the call of duty, in addition to receiving a high volume of telephone solicitations! Sure I can say shit and get special treatment to close an account with any company. Yet there was a certain je ne se quois that bore the ring of truth. In my five years working this salt mine I can smell bullshit five miles away after it's been wiped up and sprayed down with industrial-strength Lysol.

Right now I'm wise to the lead generator sites. The lead generators are selling information to other companies. Fortunately it gives Usury, Inc. plausible deniability but it's still another rung lower than the company's lending practices. Why is this even more egregious than engaging in usury? These lead generators are getting people's social security numbers. Sure they can have it in writing "LOL WE R TEH SECURE" or that SSNs aren't resold to other vendors but it's complete bullshit.

It's one thing to rip people off but to buy, sell and trade sensitive information like social security numbers is beyond belief. Of course the hands of Usury, Inc. are completely clean.

At the moment I have no way to find out the names of these lead generators. Most times the applications provided by them will have the missing information substituted with two letters which I presume are initials.

minor aside off topic
Omaha the Cat Dancer is a comic that my dad collected back in the black and white boom. I don't know if he still collects these comics but I remember hearing from the guys at Chestnut Street Comics in Union, NJ (many years out of business), that Reed Waller died of prostate cancer.

A few minutes ago I found out that he's alive and well. Kate Worley, the writer for the comic, died of cancer in 2002 many years after I heard that bit of misinformation.

Anyway it struck me as weird and decided to share it here because nobody cares.
