Visiting with the Birds on Thursday night was a mite stressful. maribou was talking about how she's going to apply for a job, how they'd probably pay for her to go back to college to earn a degree.
I just can't see going to college, even if it's on someone else's dime, to pursue a degree for a single job. The plus side is that the individual will have security. The downside is that if the job goes downhill, will that education still remain useful to the individual?
Anyway it all seems very stressful and I counted my secular blessings that I have a job which asks relatively little of me.
Now maribou is going to go all "Unnnh. Unnnh. Criticism. Stress." I'm not being critical of her. It's a preamble to writing about myself.
If I went back to school, I wouldn't pursue my fine arts curriculum. I'd want to learn to fluently speak Italian and Greek. Finish learning Spanish. Go to school to learn how to repair bikes. Heck there's a school right here in town. Eight hundred bucks for a week long course. Three thousand bucks to learn everything there is to know about fixing bikes.
Sadly I really am not an autodidact or at least my autodidactism is glacial in comparison to such luminaries as John W. Campbell and Joseph Campbell. Keep in mind they're Campbells. No one likes a Campbell. Since I'm not an autodidact, I need the socialization which comes with learning in a classroom.
If I have to learn something, I want to learn something which is useful to me and the rest of the world. Not some ephemeral science that would not have any application after TEOTWAWKI except if it happens in the context of the game Wasteland or Fallout.
I'm a simple person, borderline idiot, not some genius.
Anyway I have eight more working days until I'm on vacation in New Jersey.
