On Wednesday night, for more than two hours, I was the audience to the mournful howling of a dog. Attic Girl had a dog in her apartment who was howling every five fucking minutes because he was left alone.

First thing to go through my head was "Stupid fucking dogs". Mostly I think it's the Spot part of my brain doing the thinking for me. Eventually I realized that my annoyance was towards dogs who are so needy. Noble beasts that have become children by their own choice.

Making matters worse, there was a point where the dog would shut the fuck up for about fifteen minutes only to start howling at the top of his lungs.

Now in those quiet moments I realized as I started to drift off that I was hearing voices in my head. I know the voices were hallucinations. Now I don't remember what the voices were saying but it was a comforting thing. Just when things were getting interesting AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Maybe dogs aren't to blame for their personality and behavior. Just like humans, it's all based on how they're raised and who raises them.

the deep end
It's quarter to midnight and my patience has run out. Spot's on edge, running around the apartment then hiding where I can't find her. When I get up out of bed to get my wallet so I can get the business card for the property manager everything has a hyperrealistic feel. The hands rummaging through my pants are not my hands. Instead of seeing things through my own eyes, I'm seeing things as they're being filmed by a camera which happens to be at my eye level. Motions become fluid and surreal.

Near midnight I hear the dog bark and then get quiet. They're home. In three seconds I'm out the door and around the side completely and unnecessarily furious. Why? I need my fucking sleep. Why? Abusing a dog by abandoning the dog for a few hours.

Minutes later I'm in bed, staring at the wall realizing that I can't fucking sleep.

Fortunately I end up going to sleep yet I don't get my eight hours. Even my daily vitamins don't help the situation.
